Power Problems (Flickering, etc.)
What does it mean when the lights are flickering?
Some reasons your lights may flicker and dim:
- Large appliances and other electrical items such as furnaces, air conditioners, certain motors, garbage disposals, dishwashers, and laundry machines can cause your lights dim briefly when the appliance first starts because of the in-rush of current. For certain types of loads, such as a Central AC system, a hard-start kit can be installed to help with this issue.
- Call an electrician to trouble-shoot if your lights flicker noticeably or actually shut off for a split second or longer. Flickering can be an indication of a major issue such as a loose connection in a junction box, switch or outlet, problems in a light fixture or breaker panel, or serious faults in the meter socket or service connections. Trouble-shooting can be an extensive process, but neglecting an electrical problem can put you, your family and your home or business at risk for fire.
